Noor Singh and the Fear on Stage

A story about courage, friendship, and the magic of “Deh Shiva”

🎧 Listen only

Every child has felt it — that fluttery, knot-in-the-stomach feeling before stepping onto a stage. In this heartwarming episode of Noor Singh Niara, our brave little Singh meets a strange visitor — his very own fear. With help from his best friend Manga, his loving Pita Ji, and the timeless words of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's prayer, Noor Singh discovers that fear only grows as big as we let it.

1The School Performance

The whole school was buzzing. The annual farewell function was just a few days away, and every classroom had turned into a busy little theatre — kids practising songs, dances, poems, and shabads.

But in one corner of the playground, Noor Singh sat very, very quietly.

His mummy noticed it first. His daddy noticed it next. Even his nani, peeking through the kitchen door, knew something was on his mind. "Don't worry, beta," his mummy said gently, ruffling his patka. "You'll be wonderful. You've been preparing your shabad for weeks."

Noor Singh just smiled — the kind of smile that hides a tiny earthquake inside.

2The Strange Visitor

That night, Noor Singh sat on his bed practising the words of his shabad. The room was quiet. The fan was humming softly. And then — out of the corner of his eye — he saw something move.

A small, shadowy figure was sitting in his chair. It was strange. It was a little funny-looking. And it was grinning right at him.

"Hello, Noor Singh," the shadow said.

"Wh-who are you?" Noor Singh whispered, eyes wide.

"I'm your fear," the shadow said, swinging its little legs. "I follow you everywhere. And here's a secret — I only become as big as you let me be."

3A Best Friend's Wisdom

The next morning, Noor Singh ran to find Manga — his best friend, the one who always seemed to know the right thing to say.

"Manga," he whispered, "I think there's a fear living in my room. It came last night. It said it follows me everywhere."

Manga raised an eyebrow. Then he smiled — that wise little smile only a best friend can give.

"Noor Singh," he said, "your fear can only do what you let it do. If you don't give it permission, it can't grow. My name is Manga, and Manga bada hi changa — and Manga doesn't let fear come close."

For the first time in days, Noor Singh laughed.

4Pita Ji's Reminder

That evening, Noor Singh sat on the verandah with his Pita Ji. The sun was painting the sky orange. The neem tree was swaying gently in the breeze.

"Pita Ji," Noor Singh said, "what if I forget my words on stage? What if everyone laughs at me?"

Pita Ji placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

"Beta, do you know who you are? You are Khalsa. And the Guru's bani teaches us — Khalsa never frightens anyone, and Khalsa is never frightened by anyone. You have been preparing this shabad with so much love. Trust the Guru. Trust yourself. The Guru is always with you."

5The Prayer of Courage — Deh Shiva

Noor Singh closed his eyes and remembered the words he had been practising — the powerful prayer written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself, the prayer that Sikhs have sung for hundreds of years to find courage in difficult moments:

ਦੇਹ ਸ਼ਿਵਾ ਬਰ ਮੋਹਿ ਇਹੈ
ਸ਼ੁਭ ਕਰਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਟਰੋਂ
"Deh Shiva bar mohe ihai, shubh karman te kabhu na taro"
Grant me this boon, O God — that I may never turn away from doing good, and never fear when I go into battle.

The words felt warm in his chest, like a small, brave sun lighting up from inside.

6On the Stage

The big day arrived. The school hall was full of parents, grandparents, teachers, and kids in their brightest clothes. Bright lights shone on the stage. The microphone stood waiting.

"And next," the teacher announced, "performing a beautiful shabad — Noor Singh!"

Noor Singh walked toward the microphone. For just a second, he saw something out of the corner of his eye — a small, mischievous shadow waving from the wings of the stage.

But this time, Noor Singh didn't look at it.

He took a deep breath. He whispered "Waheguru" to himself. And then he opened his mouth and began to sing.

His voice was clear. His heart was steady. The words flowed like a river that had been waiting to be set free.

7The Whole School Claps

When Noor Singh finished, there was a moment of silence — and then the whole hall burst into applause. His mummy was wiping happy tears. Pita Ji was beaming. Even his teacher had a giant smile.

Backstage, Noor Singh ran to find Manga.

"You were right!" he said, breathless. "The fear was only as big as I let it be. I didn't let it in — and it just disappeared!"

Manga grinned. "Manga bada hi changa, te Noor Singh sabna da pyara."

⭐ The Lesson for Kids

Fear is only as big as we let it be

Every one of us feels fear sometimes — before a test, a performance, or trying something new. The Sikh way is to remember Waheguru, sing the shabads of courage, and step forward with chardi kala — a rising spirit. Just like Noor Singh, when you don’t feed your fear, it can’t grow. Be brave, little Khalsa.
