bilingual Punjabi-English kids books

Where to buy bilingual Punjabi-English kids books online?

You can buy bilingual Punjabi-English children’s books online with worldwide shipping — but the label covers two completely different kinds of book, and most people order the wrong one first.

If you want your child practising Punjabi through everyday stories, that is one kind of book. If you want Sikh content in Punjabi and English, that is another. Below is what each means, where to order from, and what to check before ordering.

First: two categories, one label

Language-learning bilingual books

Ordinary children’s stories with Punjabi and English on the page — sharing, seasons, bedtime, family. The Punjabi is the point; the content is universal. These are general storybooks translated into Punjabi, not written for a Sikh household.

Sikh-content bilingual books

Punjabi and English together, with Sikhi in the story: Naam, Seva, the Gurus, the virtues.

This category is small. We publish two bilingual story books at $18.00 AUD each.

Work out which you want before you order. A parent hoping their child will meet Guru Nanak who buys thirty translated storybooks has bought a language course, not what they were after — and the reverse is equally true.

Buying from where you are

Shipping is usually the deciding factor, not price. What differs most between orders is how far the parcel travels.

From Australia or New Zealand

Order from our Australian store. Books are $18.00–$20.00 AUD, shipping is weight-based and calculated at checkout, and we ship to virtually any address worldwide.

From India

Order from our India store, priced in rupees: bilingual titles at ₹299–₹350. Ordering the same books from Australia costs considerably more in freight than the books themselves.

One thing to know if you are in India: buy the Sukh Sunehrhe and Khem Khazana titles separately rather than as the combo. Two individual copies come to ₹598; the combo is ₹599.

From the UK, Canada or the USA

There is no local Sikh-content bilingual publisher of any scale in these countries, so you are ordering internationally whichever route you take. Order from our Australian store and allow extra time for delivery.

Why buying direct is better for this category

Marketplace search results mix bilingual books with Punjabi-only ones, English-only Sikh books, and adult titles, and listings rarely say which kind of bilingual a book is. Bilingual titles are also frequently listed by third-party sellers at inflated prices, and print-on-demand copies of the same book vary in paper and binding quality.

A specialist publisher lists the language pairing, the format and often the age, because it is the whole point of the catalogue. General marketplace category structures were not built to distinguish “bilingual” from “translated” from “transliterated” — and for these books that distinction is the entire decision.

Five things to check before ordering from any store

  • Which kind of bilingual is it? Full parallel text, English with Punjabi words dropped in, or Punjabi written in Roman letters. Only the first teaches Gurmukhi. Ask for a sample page if the listing does not say.
  • Is an age stated? Many listings, ours included on some titles, do not give one. A bilingual book for a four-year-old and one for a nine-year-old look identical in a thumbnail.
  • What is the real landed cost? Add shipping and any duty before comparing prices across countries. A cheaper book from three continents away often is not.
  • Is it in stock, or print-on-demand? Print-on-demand adds weeks. Listings rarely say.
  • What is the returns window? It varies widely, and a book that arrives wrong is a book you are stuck with if the window is short.

Why the Sikh-content category is so small

Worth being straight about, because it explains what you will find when you search.

Bilingual publishing is expensive — two languages, one print run, a small audience. General children’s stories can be translated into many languages and sold across all of them. Sikh-content bilingual books cannot: the audience is Punjabi-speaking Sikh families specifically, and the market is a fraction of the size.

That is why you will find dozens of translated storybooks online and only a handful of Sikh-content bilingual titles worldwide. It is not neglect. It is arithmetic.
